Kroger to stock Backwoods Mustard Company’s Michigan-made mustard in 37 Michigan stores.
November 05, 2013 — This November, Kroger will stock Backwoods Mustard Company’s
Michigan-made Sweet Jalapeno mustard in 37 Michigan stores. Backwoods Mustard Company will be featured on Kroger’s “Made in Michigan” promotional displays with other Michigan-made brands.
Backwoods Mustard Company is a culmination of tradition and love for the outdoors. Their Sweet Jalapeno mustard has its roots in the backwoods of the Northern Michigan deer camp. “The recipe was perfected by my mother over 20 years ago and has since become a tradition at our deer camp,” says Brian Ernst, President of Backwoods Mustard Company. Brian goes on to say, “Tradition carries significance at our camp, so I didn’t dare arrive without a few jars to compliment our meals around the bonfire.”
Backwoods Mustard Company brought their product to market in June of 2013. Now just over four months later, their product can be found in over 80 retail establishments including sporting goods stores, bars, and restaurants across Michigan as well as Ohio and Oklahoma. “We weren’t expecting our product to take off so fast,” states David Saterstad, Vice President of Backwoods Mustard Company. “To be in so many stores and now on local Kroger shelves is humbling to say the least.”
Kroger has been one of the champions in the Made in Michigan movement helping bring Michigan-made products to the forefront and boosting business for Michigan companies. Kroger has expressed how important it is to promote local products and calculated that if every household in Michigan were to spend only $10 a week on Michigan-made products, approximately $40 million would return to the state on a weekly basis.
