Our Story

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

Backwoods Mustard Company's Sweet Jalapeno has its roots in the backwoods of Northern Michigan deer camps. The recipe was perfected by my mother over 20 years ago and has since become a tradition at our camp. Tradition carries significance at our camp, so I didn't dare arrive without a few jars of this sweet and spicy mustard to compliment every meal around the bonfire.

Over the years I’ve been consistently requested to bring my mustard on various trips and events from our northern Ontario fishing trips to camping weekends and tailgating events. Its appearance at backyard barbeques was also a constant. The demand compounded over time - first it was immediate friends and family then it turned into friends of friends and their families and friends. Soon I had people offering to buy cases at a time!

I knew I had something when I started hearing that people were taking my mustard into restaurants because they thought food no longer tasted as good without it! This was inspiration for me to finally consider bringing my mustard to the masses. Hence, Backwoods Mustard Company was born.

Backwoods Mustard Company is a culmination of tradition and love for the outdoors. It’s been a long time coming but we can now say it’s officially time to… Breakout the Backwoods!
